01 The parent's role

Methodist Confirmation preparation is the candidate's, with parents in a supportive role: encouraging the catechetical study at home, attending any parent meetings the parish holds, and arranging family logistics for the day. In many UMC and GMC congregations, parents are invited to present the candidate at the Confirmation service.

02 Through the preparation year

Through the school year of Confirmation preparation, parents support the candidate's catechesis. Most parishes hold one or two parent meetings during the year, to walk through the rite and the family's role.

03 The Confirmation Sunday

The Confirmation service is at a Sunday service of the congregation. In many congregations, parents present the candidate at the appropriate moment; in others, the candidate walks alone or with a sponsor. Family photographs after the service and a family reception are typical.

04 Common questions

Do parents present the candidate at the Confirmation service?
In many UMC and GMC congregations, yes. Parents accompany the candidate to the front of the sanctuary at the appropriate moment in the service. Some congregations have other arrangements (the candidate walks alone, or with a sponsor); the pastor is the source.
Is there a parent commitment at the rite?
Some Methodist Confirmation services include a renewal of the parents' baptismal vow alongside the candidate's profession of faith. The specific wording is set by the service book; the pastor is the source.
What if the parents are not Methodist?
Non-Methodist parents are fully welcome to support the candidate's Confirmation. The Methodist tradition is generally open to mixed-tradition families; the candidate's own profession of faith is the substance of the rite.
