01 What Methodist Confirmation is

Methodist Confirmation is the candidate's first public profession of the Christian faith into which they were baptized as an infant (or in some cases as an older child). The UMC Book of Worship frames the rite as the candidate's "first opportunity to profess the faith into which they have been baptized." The GMC, formed in 2022, follows substantially similar practice.

The candidate is typically a young teenager (commonly age 12-14), though older candidates are welcome. The rite is not a sacrament in the strict Methodist understanding (Methodists recognize only baptism and the Lord's Supper as sacraments); it is a covenantal moment of mature commitment.

02 The catechetical programme

Methodist Confirmation preparation is typically a school-year programme of weekly or biweekly catechetical sessions. The content covers Methodist theology and history (the Wesleys, the rise of the Methodist movement, the connectional system), the Methodist understanding of grace (prevenient, justifying, and sanctifying), the sacraments, scripture, and the Christian life.

A retreat is common but not required; some congregations use the retreat as a culminating element of the preparation.

03 The Confirmation Sunday

The Confirmation service is celebrated at a Sunday service of the congregation. The candidates are typically presented by their parents or by a sponsor; the candidates publicly profess faith by responding to questions adapted from the Methodist baptismal liturgy. The pastor lays hands on each candidate and prays for the Holy Spirit, often using language drawn from the UMC Book of Worship or the GMC equivalent.

The candidate is welcomed into the fuller life of the congregation. Where the service includes Holy Communion, the candidate participates as a fully professing member.

04 Common questions

At what age is Methodist Confirmation?
Commonly age 12-14 in both UMC and GMC practice. Specifics vary by congregation; the pastor is the source.
What does the preparation cover?
Methodist theology and history, the Methodist understanding of grace (the threefold framework of prevenient, justifying, and sanctifying grace), the sacraments (baptism and the Lord's Supper), scripture, and the Christian life. The format varies by congregation; weekly classes through a school year is typical.
What is the difference between UMC and GMC Confirmation?
The substance of Methodist Confirmation is similar across the two denominations. The principal differences in practice reflect the wider differences between the bodies (the GMC formed in 2022 over disagreements with the UMC, particularly on the question of same-sex marriage and clergy). At the level of the Confirmation rite itself, the two are very similar.
What happens at the rite?
The candidate is welcomed; the candidate professes faith publicly (typically by responding to questions adapted from the Methodist baptismal liturgy); the pastor lays hands on the candidate and prays for the Holy Spirit; the candidate is welcomed into the fuller life of the congregation. The service follows the order in the UMC Book of Worship or the GMC equivalent.
