Anglican First Communion as a guest
What to expect at an Anglican or Episcopal First Communion celebration as a friend or extended-family guest.
01 Before the day
Anglican and Episcopal First Communion is not a canonical milestone the way Catholic First Communion is. Where the family marks a First Communion celebration, the service is typically a regular Sunday Eucharist with the child receiving in a marked moment.
02 Attire and gifts
Church-formal Sunday attire is typical. A small religious gift for the child is conventional: a children's Bible, a children's prayer book, a cross or medal.
03 At the service
Guests typically arrive 15 minutes before the service begins. The service follows the normal Sunday Eucharist order, with the child receiving Communion in a marked moment. Most TEC and many ACNA parishes practice open communion, inviting all baptized Christians to the altar. Non-Christian guests may remain in the pew or come forward with arms crossed for a blessing.
04 After the service
Family photographs after the service are typical; a family reception at home or at a restaurant often follows.
