01 Before the day

A Lutheran First Communion is celebrated within a Sunday Eucharist of the congregation. ELCA practice typically celebrates First Communion at a designated Sunday service around fifth grade; LCMS practice typically celebrates First Communion alongside or shortly after Confirmation in the early-to-mid teens.

02 Attire and gifts

Church-formal Sunday attire is typical. A small religious gift for the candidate is conventional: a Bible, a Lutheran devotional book, a cross or medal. Practical gifts are also fine.

03 At the service

Guests typically arrive 15 minutes before the service begins. The service follows the normal Sunday Eucharist order, with the new communicant receiving in a marked moment. ELCA practice is typically open communion, inviting all baptized Christians; LCMS practice tends to be closer to closed communion. The pastor will extend the invitation explicitly.

04 After the service

Family photographs after the service are typical; a family reception at home or at a restaurant often follows.
