The Code of Canon Law (Latin: Codex Iuris Canonici, abbreviated CIC) is the 1983 codification of the laws governing the Roman Catholic Church of the Latin Rite, replacing the 1917 Code. References on this site take the form CIC c. 1108 (canon 1108) or CIC cc. 1024-1051 (canons 1024 through 1051). The Code covers sacraments, holy orders, religious life, the structures of the Church, and many other matters. A parallel Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches (CCEO, 1990) governs the Eastern Catholic churches in communion with Rome.
