First blessing

In Catholic and Orthodox tradition, a first blessing is the blessing a newly ordained priest gives to family members, close friends, and any present clergy after the ordination Mass or Divine Liturgy. The first blessing is traditionally held to carry particular spiritual significance; some Catholic traditions speak of receiving a newly ordained priest's first blessing as a moment of special grace. The newly ordained typically blesses each person individually, often with the laying on of hands; family members are normally given priority.
