Vespers
The evening prayer service of the Liturgy of the Hours.
Vespers is the evening prayer service of the Liturgy of the Hours (called the Daily Office in Anglican tradition). The service is typically prayed at sunset or in the early evening and includes psalms, a scripture reading, the Magnificat (Mary's song from Luke 1), and intercessory prayers. Orthodox Vespers is particularly prominent, often anticipating the celebration of the following day's feast (the liturgical day in Orthodox practice begins at sunset of the preceding day, following the Jewish reckoning). Anglican Evening Prayer in the Book of Common Prayer is a distilled form of Vespers and Compline together.
