An acolyte is a layperson, often a young person, who assists the priest at the altar during a Catholic Mass, an Anglican Eucharist, or an Orthodox Divine Liturgy. Specific duties vary by tradition and parish: carrying candles in the procession, holding the book at the priest's chair, presenting the cruets at the offertory, ringing the bells at consecration. In Catholic practice the role is formally instituted at one point of seminary formation; in most US Catholic, Anglican, and Orthodox parishes, the working role is filled by young members of the parish.
