Zechariah (Father of John the Baptist)

Zechariah the priest is the husband of Elizabeth and the father of John the Baptist (Luke 1). His Benedictus prayer (Luke 1:68-79) is part of the Daily Office across the Western Christian traditions. The English form Zachary has been in continuous use; the form Zechariah is more common in modern Protestant and Evangelical families.

Zechariah is one of the twelve minor prophets, a sixth-century BC figure whose visions and oracles are recorded in the book of Zechariah. The prophecy of the king riding on a donkey (Zechariah 9:9) is read in the gospel narrative of Palm Sunday (Matthew 21:5; John 12:15). The same name in the Greek form belongs to the father of John the Baptist.
