Zechariah (Father of John the Baptist)
Meaning: Hebrew "the Lord remembers."
Figure: Father of John the Baptist; priest of the division of Abijah (Luke 1:5-25, 57-79).
Zechariah the priest is the husband of Elizabeth and the father of John the Baptist (Luke 1). His Benedictus prayer (Luke 1:68-79) is part of the Daily Office across the Western Christian traditions. The English form Zachary has been in continuous use; the form Zechariah is more common in modern Protestant and Evangelical families.
